Capo Ecnomo 256 a.C. La squadra di Aderbale, ammiraglio cartaginese, (a sinistra) finge la ritirata per indurre all'inseguimento la flotta romana (a destra), schierata in una insolita formazione triangolare, per circondarla e distruggerla.

Cape Ecnomus 256 B.C. The squadron of Adherbal, Carthaginian admiral, (on the left) feints a retreat inducing the Roman fleet - deployed in an unusual triangular formation -to pursuit, to then surround and destroy them (on the right).

Here the BACKGROUND of the epic struggle!

I due consoli, Marco Attilio Regolo e Lucio Manlio Vulsone, vedendo la propria formazione a V minacciata sui fianchi, volgono le prue verso i lati. Il centro cartaginese è lesto ad approfittarne per speronare il fianco ora scoperto delle navi romane!

The two consuls, Marcus Regulus and Lucius Manlius Vulso, seeing their V formation menaced on both flanks, offer the prows to the sides. The Carthaginian center is fast to take profit by ramming the now unprotected side of the Roman ships!

Le due ammiraglie romane, attaccate ognuna da due navi nemiche,
finiscono presto in braccio a Nettuno!

The two Roman flagships, attached by two enemies each,
are rapidly sent in Neptunes's arms!

La squadra di Vulsone, furiosa per la perdita del proprio comandante, si scaglia contro la sinistra cartaginese. I romani usano la loro sperimentata tattica del "corvo", ma qualcosa non va per il verso giusto: una pentera romana, a causa del preciso tiro difensivo, si scoraggia e resta indietro, in fiamme e con una falla, mentre ben due abbordaggi si protraggono senza un risultato decisivo (in basso a destra). Solo una pentera punica viene catturata (in alto con la bandierina rossa)

Vulso's squadron, angered by the loss of its commander, collides with the Carthaginian left. The Romans use their proven tactic of the "raven", but something does not go their way: a Roman quinquireme, hit by precise defensive fire, staggers holed and in flames, while two boardings rage on without a decisive result (bottom right). Only a punic quinquireme is captured (in the middle with the red flag)!

Solo una nave della squadra di Regolo è alla distanza per agganciare col corvo una nave nemica. I punici rispondono con la forza della disperazione e l'esito resta in bilico.Sulla destra una pentera punica è in fiamme per il preciso tiro delle baliste romane.

Only a ship of Regulus squadron is in range to engage an enemy ship with her "raven". The Punics reply with the energy of despair, and the outcome hangs in the balance. On the right a Punic quinquireme is on fire for the accurate shooting by the Romans' ballistae.

I cartaginesi spingono a fondo al centro ed altre navi romane vengono affondate o ridotte a relitti galleggianti. Sulla sinistra due navi una cartaginese ed una romana, entrambe semiaffondate, i punici in fiamme, sono avviluppate in una disperata lotta per la sopravvivenza.

The Carthaginians to push in the center and other Roman ships are sunk or reduced to flotsam. On the left two ships one Carthaginian and another Roman, both holed, the Punic one also in flames, are enveloped in a desperate struggle for survival.

Lo sfondamento al centro è così completo che le unità di testa giungono a tiro delle baliste della retroguardia romana. L'ignoto comandante della squadra dirige un tiro così preciso sull'ammiraglia cartaginese che Aderbale costretto ad una ignominiosa fuga!

The breakthrough in the center is so complete that the head units come in range of the  Roman rearguard ballistae. The unknown commander of the squadron directs such an effective shooting on the Carthaginian flagship that Adherbal is forced to an ignominious flight!

I due vascelli avvinti in un abbraccio mortale riescono a turare le falle, ma non a spegnere l'incendio che si estende anche all'unità romana...

The two vessels embroiled in a deadly embrace manage to plug the leaks, but not to put out the fire which also envelops the Roman unit ...

La fuga del lor ammiraglio non vale a rallentare i punici.
La mischia si fa estremamente convulsa, ma volge contro i romani. Le navi romane coinvolte negli abbordaggi protratti vengono speronate, catturate dagli ormai inarrestabili punici o semplicemente soccombono ai danni già subiti.

Even the flight of their admiral is not going to stop the Punic forces.
The struggle becomes extremely hectic, but clearly turns against the Romans. The Roman ships involved in the protracted boardings are just rammed, captured by the apparently unstoppable Punics or simply succumb to the damage already suffered.

Il centro romano, decimato e circondato da agguerriti cartaginesi, non sembra in grado di reagire adeguatamente. A fronte delle gravi perdite subite (circa 15 unità tra affondate e catturate) i romani possono solo vantare la cattura di una manciata di navi nemiche e, circondati da ogni parte, e appesantiti dalle navi onerarie, sembra difficile che i romani possano ribaltare la situazione.

VITTORIA CARTAGINESE!

The Roman center, decimated and surrounded by fierce Carthaginians, does not seem to be able to react adequately. Given the heavy losses suffered (around 15 units sunk or captured) the Romans can boast only an handful of captured enemy ships and, surrounded everywhere, laden the by cargo ships, it's difficult that they could turn the tables.

CARTHAGINIAN VICTORY!

Che dire? I romani sono stati ampiamente svantaggiati sia dalla loro strana disposizione iniziale sia dal mazzo, le carte movimento sono finite in fondo rendendo la flotta romana incapace di reagire adeguatamente. Ma la rivincita di Regolo e Vulsone potrebbe essere dietro l'angolo...

What to say? The Romans have been largely disadvantaged either by their strange initial scenario layout is or by their deck (the movement cards went at the bottom, making the Roman fleet unable to react adequately). But Regulus and Vulso revenge could well be around the corner ...
